Community

Support Native Communities

I will use the resource links provided below and spend 10 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Go Paperless

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

COMPLETED

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

The biggest factor in my mind for using disposable water bottles is convenience, so I've made it a habit to keep my reusable water bottle with me at all times so I never have a need to use anything else.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I think using washable silverware instead of taking the plastic silverware when getting takeout is a great/easy way to reduce unnecessary waste. Same thing goes for using a reusable water bottle instead of the plastic takeout cups.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?

I'll do my best to report leaks like this one in the future as well as turn off any dripping faucets I see around campus.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

Honestly, I think switching subscriptions, etc. to email is just more organized and efficient anyway, so I think there are a lot of reasons to make the change.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

I think the most important thing is just to be mindful of how much paper you're using when printing. I think signs posted on campus printers to remind people to use double sided paper would be really effective
