I will make sure I’m registered to vote. While I’m at it, I’ll sign up to help others register too!
Community
Connect with a Nonprofit
I will connect with a local nonprofit, environmental or otherwise, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 5 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 45 minute(s) each day.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 90 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 30 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Energy
Learn About Renewable Energy
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about renewable energy alternatives (i.e. solar, wind, biomass) in my region.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Chris Tomo 5/01/2021 7:01 PMLuckily, most of my day-to-day transportation involves walking around campus, but I also go into places like Davis and Boston pretty frequently. When I go, I try to walk (if it's close) or take the T instead of ubering with friends. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Chris Tomo 5/01/2021 6:59 PMI notice that I am composting a lot of food from the dining halls. Being more conscious about how much I am actually going to eat when I order will definitely help me reduce the amount that I have to compost. I use the compost bins in my dorm, so I am not sure how that compost is used when it is ready. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Chris Tomo 4/22/2021 11:00 AMI can incorporate "refuse" into my lifestyle by refusing disposable shopping bags, plastic straws, single-use plastic, and other items and use sustainable alternatives instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Chris Tomo 4/21/2021 11:09 AMTaking a weekend trip to the fells and exploring a new area reminded me that there is so much more beyond the Tufts campus. I returned from my trip feeling refreshed and motivated to finish out the semester strong! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. How have you used technology to replace in-person meetings or work this year?
Chris Tomo 4/19/2021 6:02 PMDue to the COVID pandemic, essentially all of my classes and meetings have taken place online, but I think that the widespread use of Zoom has shown that the traditional 9 to 5 commute is not remotely a necessity in corporate America. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Chris Tomo 4/19/2021 10:40 AMI could certainly stand to get more sleep per night. I also think I need to shift my sleep schedule earlier, because most nights I am going to bed after 1 am. Staying on top of my work and doing it during the day (instead of procrastinating) could help me shift my sleep schedule. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Chris Tomo 4/19/2021 10:37 AMI like to exercise outside (such as going for a run along the mystic river) to incorporate nature into my routine, especially when I get tired of the gym environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity SIGN UP TO VOTEWhy is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?
Chris Tomo 4/19/2021 10:36 AMBy voting for politicians in favor of bold, decisive action to protect our environment and live sustainably, we can advance policy measures like the Green New Deal that help create a more sustainable society. Volunteering and organizing for political campaigns or political action groups are other ways I can actively participate beyond simply voting.
