Michelle's actions
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 5 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Simplicity
Disconnect from Email
I will disconnect from my email when not at work or school, using my personal time for endeavors that help me live out my values.
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 10 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Waste
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 10 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided below and spend 30 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products
I will spend 20 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home or dorm room.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Michelle W 4/30/2021 10:25 AMSpending time outdoors in a natural brain reset. Humans evolved connected to the natural world around us. Our brains were designed to work best surrounded by green and sunshine. Going outside and connecting with natures helps me let go of all the modern things that don't matter; resetting me to be able to get what I need to done. -
Michelle W 4/30/2021 10:19 AMI really enjoyed participating in this challenge. I learned about about how I can better support the environment and people around me. I will definitely continue thinking about what I can do on a daily basis to continue living more sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Disconnect from EmailNotice how much time you were spending checking email away from work and make note of that. Now that you have stepped away from it and have not been checking, what changes are you noticing in your thoughts, use of time, stress and energy levels?
Michelle W 4/29/2021 1:40 PMI am a compulsive email checker. I often check my email when I have a spare moment on my computer, I'm anxious about something else, or I have nothing to do. Rarely is there anything new and important. Stepping away from checking my email so much has helped me be less anxious and focus on things that actually matter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Michelle W 4/28/2021 5:19 PMTrying to have less screen time wasn't that difficult. Once I made it a goal it was easier for me to remember to do other things. I have a bunch of hobbies that aren't online. This helped me motivate myself to put my phone down and start one of those. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm RoomHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?
Michelle W 4/26/2021 1:51 PMWhen looking to buy something ask yourself if you actually need it. If you do not need it think hard about if you should actually buy it. Some questions to ask yourself could be: can I afford this? is this the more sustainable form of this thing? do I have space to store this thing? will I actually use this thing long-term? Going through your things periodically and getting rid of those you don't use will also help you learn what you do and don't use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Michelle W 4/21/2021 10:28 AMWhen planning your garden it is important to keep in mind the pollinators. Pollinators are vital to your garden and the larger ecosystem. Choose a mix of native, old world plants to support honey bees, and new world plants to support native bee populations. Bees especially like basil and thyme so let some of your plants go flower to help them out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Joyful MovementWhat's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?
Michelle W 4/19/2021 2:28 PMI love to put on my favorite songs and dance around my room. I just move how my body wants to and don't care what I look like. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Practice Gratitude for EarthKathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?
Michelle W 4/19/2021 11:53 AMI agree that gratitude for something leads you to feeling an obligation to protect that thing. Feeling connected with nature and grateful for all that it gives you leads you to wanting to have access to nature forever and wanting others to have access as well. This brings a sense of duty to protect and share natural spaces. Getting people more attune with nature will lead to more gratitude and want to protect the natural world. Modern society keeps people so disconnected and we need to counteract this to better be able to bring about the changes we need to implement to protect this world.
