  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall's avatar
    Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall 11/04/2020 5:52 PM
In the transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems, only some industries and urban areas were pinpointed for development. Rural and poorer areas, on the other hand, were exploited as places to get cheap labor. The wealthy used these areas to produce raw materials and cheap food. Therefore while these places produce these items for wealthier countries, they cannot even afford the items that they produce and receive barely any compensation in return.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

Looking at the Native Americans as an example, they never took more resources than were necessary. They believed that the resources they used they were merely borrowing from future generations, and took special care to keep the balance in nature. They never hunted buffalo greedily and to extinction, that was the doing of the white men.

Looking at Native Hawaiians, they were careful not to overfish. They had rules in place to ensure that the fish population would be stable. They never killed young fish and made sure to only fish for fully matured adult fish.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall's avatar
    Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall 11/04/2020 5:38 PM
The poor and underserved communities are most impacted by environmental degradation and pollution. A survey has found that toxic waste plants, dump sites, landfills, etc. were placed not in communities with affluent residents, but in communities with poor residents and rural communities. This is extremely unfair and creates hazardous conditions for primarily poorer people, the very people who do not have the funds needed to pay for extremely expensive hospital bills.
