I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Go Paperless

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 1

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Building Resilience

Help Others

I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I sleep from about 1am to about 8am and I'd like to shift my sleep schedule to at least go to bed at 11:30. It's very hard to do so because I use my phone before bed and I take a nap in the daytime. When I skip the nap it's easier to fall asleep earlier but it's difficult to because I get burnt out during the day. It's a nasty cycle I'd like to break.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

Since I'm not in Vermont, it was pretty insightful how much I learned about the rules in my hometown and how they differ from Burlington! I found out there's a few items I thought I could recycle but in reality, I can't. So I hope I can relay this info to my family so that we can change our habits to keep from further contamination. There's also a flyer online specifically for my area that I can print out and I think it'd be very helpful for people in my community to have as well! The hardest part is going to be changing my habits, especially rinsing some of my items before recycling because it's not something I normally do.
