Nerida's actions
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Help Others
I will offer to help 1 person(s) who are in need each day.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 60 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.

Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Waste
Use the Bite App
Using the Bite App and getting your food in EcoWare is a great way to stay safe and get food quickly. Make sure to return your EcoWare!
Waste
Return your EcoWare
Returning your EcoWare helps Eco-Reps and UVM Dining keep the program moving. Reusable is always better than compostable and recyclable.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Nerida Williams 4/24/2021 8:49 PMI sleep from about 1am to about 8am and I'd like to shift my sleep schedule to at least go to bed at 11:30. It's very hard to do so because I use my phone before bed and I take a nap in the daytime. When I skip the nap it's easier to fall asleep earlier but it's difficult to because I get burnt out during the day. It's a nasty cycle I'd like to break. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Nerida Williams 4/24/2021 8:46 PMSince I'm not in Vermont, it was pretty insightful how much I learned about the rules in my hometown and how they differ from Burlington! I found out there's a few items I thought I could recycle but in reality, I can't. So I hope I can relay this info to my family so that we can change our habits to keep from further contamination. There's also a flyer online specifically for my area that I can print out and I think it'd be very helpful for people in my community to have as well! The hardest part is going to be changing my habits, especially rinsing some of my items before recycling because it's not something I normally do.
