Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

With my lunch today from the cellar I did not take a straw with my meal. I just used one from my dorm.

During the past few days, I have not been as good at keeping the lights or electronics off when I need to. However, this whole using a metal straw thing seems to be getting easier. I use one everyday for my coffee, and sometimes throughout the day if I was my straw.

The past few nights I have been completely shutting off the TV in our dorm room so we do not waste electricity. This is a little difficult because I need white noise when I sleep, and I am so used to having the TV on. The sleep I am getting has not been very great, but I am sure with some times I will get used to it.

On the 12th, I used a reusable straw all day to avoid plastic.

Yesterday, I committed myself to not turning on any light in my room until night!

Although I have not been active the past few days, I have been keeping up with managing how much energy I use between TV screens, keeping things unplugged, and turning off lights when I leave the room.

Like I do every morning, I went to get my coffee. Once again, I did not use a plastic straw and brought my own. Later tonight I plan on getting food with friends at a restaurant and will ask that the waiter does not bring us straws with our drinks! I will only count it for myself though, as I don't know how my friends feel.

Last night I made sure to turn off all the lights, including our ferry lights, before leaving to go to a friend's. Normally, I would not think twice about turning off EVERY light. This challenge is really helping me think twice about the little things so far.

Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I could also bring my reusable cups/bottles to places and see if they are taking them. Right now, that might be hard because of COVID, but maybe in the future.

When I went to the coffee shop this morning, I brought my own straw so they did not have to give it to me! Also, I am trying to use all the natural light in my room today seeing as its a bright sunny day!
