Scott's actions
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Water
Use Reusable Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 120 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 120 minute(s) each day.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 45-minute walk outside each day.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 100 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.

Scott Benson 11/19/2020 3:44 PMIt's been going really well. Today I avoided 3 straws and bought a new Brita water filtration system instead of buying a set of plastic water bottles. -
Scott Benson 11/19/2020 3:21 PMComing to the end of the Ecochallenge, I feel like I've been a lot more motivated to follow these daily tasks. Whether it's spending more time outside, avoiding straws, or any of the tasks, it serves a greater purpose beyond just getting the task done for class. -
Scott Benson 10/22/2020 5:18 PMI'm incredibly proud of my teammates and colleagues for fulfilling the ecochallenge call and going the extra mile to improve their environment and personal lifestyles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
Scott Benson 10/22/2020 5:14 PMWater is the most necessary resource we have besides oxygen. It's in quite literally everything. Not only for our own necessity, but it is utilized in the production or utilization of everything. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Scott Benson 10/22/2020 5:08 PMWithout a lot of rain in our area, which is always, we never have any replenishment. So reusable/sustainable water future must come from a collective effort for conservation. Taking shorter showers, making sure taps aren't running, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Scott Benson 10/22/2020 5:06 PMI use coffee cups pretty regularly at my job. Working as a newly hired barista doesn't give a lot of voice for change, while at the same time makes me feel as though I'm contributing to the cause. I know that our company talked about utilizing reusable cups and adding it to the cost of the drink so that people are motivated to reuse the cups.-
Samuel Brasesco 10/22/2020 9:54 PMHey bro don't sweat it. If you decline to stay they'll probably ask you to be the one who makes reusable cups the new norm at the company! Im proud of you Scott, damn proud.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Scott Benson 10/22/2020 5:04 PMThe largest body of water in San Diego is the ocean, but for accessible water to use, there is a reservoir pretty nearby. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Scott Benson 10/11/2020 3:42 PMMy exercise routine has always been more enjoyable with people. Apart from at home workouts, playing tennis or skateboarding is how I'm able to interact with certain people while getting daily exercise. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole CommunityA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
Scott Benson 10/11/2020 3:38 PMI can personally combat systemic racism by supporting MBE's and focusing my consumer habits on those that prioritize sustainable and ethical business practices. Further, I'll distribute profit to those that deserve the support. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Scott Benson 10/11/2020 2:43 PMYou begin to appreciate the finer details of your environment. Neighbors, foliage, traffic, all of it can be beautiful in a way. Taking life at a slower pace is often the best way to live.
