Tanner's actions
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Nature
Leave No Trace
I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
I will cook 2 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Nature
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 60 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 60 minute(s) each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch?
Tanner Bolton 8/01/2021 2:00 PMI spent this weekend at my cabin and observed lots of wildlife and scenic views. I smelled fresh air, saw the once known as the Rocky Mountain elk that were reintroduced to Northern PA, and plenty of white tailed deer looking for a hunting spot in the fall. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Tanner Bolton 7/29/2021 6:10 PMIm not so sure about the spiritualness of being outdoors, but no matter what I always feel emotionally better after spending time outside. It may be different for a culture that spends most of their days outside with no choice. We/most of us are used to a world inside and being kinda trapped there versus other cultures not having a choice. To me its more of an escape from everyday life that were accustomed to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Food LifestyleMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Tanner Bolton 7/22/2021 6:19 AMI believe that this means although healthier and locally sourced food tends to be more expensive than less healthier processed foods, it ends up saving you more money in the long run due to medical bills that would occur from living an unhealthy lifestyle and eating more processed foods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Tanner Bolton 7/15/2021 6:19 AMIt can be quite easy to incorporate both friends/family while also being in nature and getting a good workout. You can can choose to ride your bike (which I do often) or go hiking at a local park.
