Luke's actions
Water
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Create Your Own Action
Forage for My Food
I will use the resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 30 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Luke MacCormick 10/14/2018 6:47 PMMissed a day of checking in over the weekend, distracted by a frisbee tournament at Kitztown University! -
Luke MacCormick 10/11/2018 11:37 AMSad to see the rain today, but I'm still biking around campus! -
Luke MacCormick 10/10/2018 8:04 PMEating vegan meals is easier than I thought it was going to be! I’ve been eating a lot of veggie burgers in the caf and the only thing I really have to think about is chocolate milk and cheese. -
Luke MacCormick 10/09/2018 10:04 AMThis morning, I learned about food deserts and Project Share, which helps members of the Carlisle community. Later this month, the Treehouse members will be volunteering at Project Share, some of us going to a local farm and gleaning extra harvest to redistribute to community members. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Luke MacCormick 10/08/2018 5:32 AMI think that shifting a meat focused culture away from meat is a big challenge. I think it has been happening very slowly over time and altering the stigma of vegetarianism and veganism is an important first step. -
Luke MacCormick 10/08/2018 5:27 AMThis weekend was the Dickinson ultimate frisbee teams home tournament at D Park. During the tournament, I saw many people putting things in the wrong waste stream andI think that sports events could be a good target for waste reduction efforts. -
Luke MacCormick 10/04/2018 11:39 AMToday I learned a lot about trees and how they are pollinated! I am planning on experimenting with transplanting tree cuttings and seeds from around campus. -
Luke MacCormick 10/03/2018 7:34 PMToday for a lab, I was in Michaud state forest. I highly recommend a visit for anyone who hasn't been out there! It's really great to be able to get out into the woods every once in a while! -
Luke MacCormick 10/02/2018 4:03 PMJust hung up a bird house outside the treehouse to attract local birds and hopefully they will help eat the mosquitos and flies that swarm the lawn! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Luke MacCormick 10/02/2018 6:08 AMI think that time spent outside fosters a dependency and a respect for nature. A culture that spends most of its time indoors causes people to become apathetic about the world outside and is dangerous when people are making decisions about how natural resources should be used or destroyed
