Ilse's actions
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 1 conversations.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Go For A Daily Walk Outside
I will take a walk outside for 45 minutes each day.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 120 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Food
Join a Local CSA
I will sign up for a local CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture).
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace, dorm, or elsewhere on campus.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 60 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 6:54 PMA challenge I have faced with switching to reusable mugs has been my mugs' inconvenience and misplacement. It has also been difficult to take the mug to places, especially because some mugs do not have a lid, and they can easily spill when traveling. Knowing that I can make even the smallest difference has helped me feel like I am doing something helpful for my community.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 6:34 PMI can incorporate the other Rs into my life style in many ways. For repurpose I have opened up a Pinterest account to get ideas on how to repurpose my plastic items. I can reuse these items when I repurpose them. I can also look for ways to repair broken items with things I have repurposed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 6:17 PMOpting for email receipts, advertisements, and personal mail has made my house less messy. It helps me keep organized and conveniently puts everything in one place. I usually do not look at the advertisements in the mail and try to get rid of them as fast as possible because they just clutter the house. I feel a sense of gratification, knowing that I helped reduce paper waste. My next step in reducing my paper waste is fully using all my notebooks front and back page and using both sides of the paper when printing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Join a Local CSADependable fresh food, better prices (cutting out carbon-heavy supply chain and grocery stores), supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these benefits (or others not listed here) inspires you the most?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 5:56 PMSupporting local farmers inspires me the most because I feel like I would have a better connection with where my food comes from. Having that connection helps me make more considerate choices when it comes to food shopping. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Engage In Active ListeningWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 5:37 PMActively listening to someone changed my understanding of communication. When I actively listened to the people around me, I started to notice more things about them. In turn, the people around me opened up a little more because they felt like they could trust me more.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Go For A Daily Walk OutsideFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 5:26 PMTaking a walk every day has really helped me with time management. I often start working and lose track of time; before I know it, it is night time. Adding an hour walk a day has helped me reduce my stress and bond more with my kids. When I get back to work, I feel refreshed and ready to resume.-
Ana Dutciuc 11/29/2020 10:34 PMkeep it up!

Josiel Perez 11/29/2020 5:36 PMI remember going to the gym and seeing many people on the treadmills. I have always wondered why they don't run outside instead of paying for a membership. Walking outside is great! Just be careful with the pandemic!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 5:07 PMI currently sleep anywhere from 4-5 hours a day. My goal is to eventually shift my sleep pattern to reach 8 hours of sleep. I am only able to sleep 45 minutes more than when I started the challenge. The actions I began to take are limiting screen time and adjusting my children's sleep schedules. I did this by creating a calm and quiet environment for both myself and my kids to sleep.
-
Ana Dutciuc 11/29/2020 10:34 PMSame! I usually try to keep myself occupied throughout the day so I feel even more tired at night.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Ilse Monarrez 11/29/2020 4:52 PMPracticing gratitude can keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world because it helps you have a better life outlook. Having a more optimistic attitude can help you strive to do better things, even if they seem impossible. Some issues may seem impossible to solve, but there is always a solution to everything if you just persist.
