Maggie's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Nature
Leave No Trace
I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Maggie Muldoon 10/31/2021 11:37 AMi would say i usually walk for 20 minutes outside on a daily basis, just to get to class, and to get food. recently though, i have encouraged my friends to walk over to different parts of campus for different meals. not only does this allow us to eat something different, but it allows us to get outside for longer and get some fresh air! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Maggie Muldoon 10/31/2021 11:35 AMon october 16th, i went to a concert with friends in pittsburgh. the drive was almost 300 miles there (600 miles roundtrip). while we could've flown, we drove. it was pretty easy to make this decision, since plane tickets are much more expensive than driving. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Maggie Muldoon 10/31/2021 11:26 AMit is easy to avoid plastic straws at rit, because they are not here anymore, mostly. at all of the popular breakfast spots (midnight oil, beanz, atresano's), the straws are paper, not plastic. additionally, i always carry around metal straws to use just in case :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Tend a GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Maggie Muldoon 10/31/2021 11:24 AMgardening has always been a big part of my life, because at home my family grows a vegetable garden in the summer and we always use it to make meals. at rit. i have helped volunteer in the community garden a few times. while i cannot commit to it every week, whenever i am able to go i love to. my most significant experience in nature was when i went hiking in the adirondacks and completed 3 high peaks with my dad. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Enjoy the Sunrise/SunsetFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Maggie Muldoon 10/31/2021 11:22 AMwatching the sunset/sunrise is something i have always enjoyed, whether on campus or at home. sometimes my friends and i go to ontario beach park to enjoy the sunset. it is always super peaceful and a nice break from the stress of school.
