John's actions
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 4 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Food
Locally-Sourced Meals
I will source 1 meal(s) each day from local producers.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 12 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Whole Food Lifestyle
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

John Seidel 10/13/2020 7:46 PMThis article on fire-fighting beavers caught my attention - as does the site it was on! We all need a little goods new very once in a while.

John Seidel 10/08/2020 5:57 AMWow! This is pretty cool. Building in an age-old technique to make ice naturally during the summer, without conventional refrigeration, this use of nano-technology could be a game-changer!

John Seidel 10/07/2020 5:42 PMYou know, these actions don’t truly capture the reduction in impact of some our changed behaviors during the pandemic. When I think about how much carbon I haven’t emitted since March, whether in the car or in the air, it’s WAY beyond what’s reflected here! I guess that’s a silver lining, yes?-
Michelle Henry 10/08/2020 8:45 AMYes, that's such a good point. It's creating more awareness of the small actions which are so critical to more impactful change.

John Seidel 10/01/2020 4:06 PMIn the field today, and what an amazingly beautiful day it was! On the way into the site, watched an enormous bald eagle take off and soar over the field. Clear skies, nice temperatures, and great to be outside for a change, instead of in front of a computer. -
