Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water

Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Ashalei Smith 4/07/2022 10:01 PMI will put the money towards my grocery bill or gas bill. Prices are rising on everything.-
Nordia Rendon 4/09/2022 7:08 PMHi Ashalei, you are right prices are rising and it is wise to use that money towards groceries or gas which are things we need to complete our daily activities. I would also use the money I save from making more energy efficient choices towards buying more energy efficient products such as polar panels that can further help me reduce my electricity bill.

Ashalei Smith 4/04/2022 8:51 PMSo far so good. I am noticing things that I can do daily around my house to help make an impact. I plan on finding local activities that I can do in my community as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Ashalei Smith 4/04/2022 8:49 PMWe have been in a drought for quite sometime, I believe most of the reason is because we use too much water and we do not practice conservation. I tend to do laundry about 2 times a week and I can help conserve by cutting that in half and wash once weekly. Also, 5 minute showers would help conserve on my water bill also. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Ashalei Smith 4/04/2022 8:47 PMI get an iced coffee daily from Starbucks. They now have these cool lids that don't require a straw but I usually ask for one anyways. For this week I will skip the straw to help reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans.-
Eva Santoyo 4/05/2022 7:31 PMI agree, the cool lids are super beneficial. I also like taking my cute Starbucks coffee cups/tumblers to be filled.
