Missed a day of checking in over the weekend, distracted by a frisbee tournament at Kitztown University!

Sad to see the rain today, but I'm still biking around campus!

Eating vegan meals is easier than I thought it was going to be! I’ve been eating a lot of veggie burgers in the caf and the only thing I really have to think about is chocolate milk and cheese.

This morning, I learned about food deserts and Project Share, which helps members of the Carlisle community. Later this month, the Treehouse members will be volunteering at Project Share, some of us going to a local farm and gleaning extra harvest to redistribute to community members.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

I think that shifting a meat focused culture away from meat is a big challenge. I think it has been happening very slowly over time and altering the stigma of vegetarianism and veganism is an important first step.

This weekend was the Dickinson ultimate frisbee teams home tournament at D Park. During the tournament, I saw many people putting things in the wrong waste stream andI think that sports events could be a good target for waste reduction efforts.

Today I learned a lot about trees and how they are pollinated! I am planning on experimenting with transplanting tree cuttings and seeds from around campus.

Today for a lab, I was in Michaud state forest. I highly recommend a visit for anyone who hasn't been out there! It's really great to be able to get out into the woods every once in a while!

Just hung up a bird house outside the treehouse to attract local birds and hopefully they will help eat the mosquitos and flies that swarm the lawn!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I think that time spent outside fosters a dependency and a respect for nature. A culture that spends most of its time indoors causes people to become apathetic about the world outside and is dangerous when people are making decisions about how natural resources should be used or destroyed
