Bree's actions

Simplicity

Eat Mindfully

I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.

COMPLETED 53
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Carry my Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 74
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Reduce refined sugar

I will keep track and reduce my consumption of refined sugars, including sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Whole Food Lifestyle

I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Happiness

I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Exercise Daily

Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 45 minute(s) each day.

COMPLETED 33
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

More Fruits and Veggies

I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Reduce Animal Products

I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

COMPLETED 45
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Buy From a Farmers Market

I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Create Your Own Action

Fast Fashion ban

Fast fashion contributes to mass pollution and unethical treatment of people all over the world. I pledge to ban from shopping from these companies for the entirety of the semester (and hopefully longer). Instead, when I need clothes, I will buy from fair trade/certified ethical/conscious fashion companies.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

I could start buying from companies that help solve the problem of food waste. For example, I discovered a company at the farmer's market that recycles fruit and veggies that have been discarded from juice shops. It's just the parts of the produce that have had the juice sucked out of them. They will take the juiced produce and use it to make yummy baked goods! It's totally healthy and good for us and the planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Bree Hulan's avatar
    Bree Hulan 10/22/2018 9:48 PM
I am trying to refuse more plastic and paper packaging by buying in bulk, repurposing old clothes and other items, and refusing plastic at restaurants. It's hard though with the pressure!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Bree Hulan's avatar
    Bree Hulan 10/22/2018 9:46 PM
I love bringing my friends with me to our school gym, and we lift weights outside the gym while watching the ocean/sunset!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

It has been really beneficial and has helped me to notice more when I am full so I don't overeat. It's helped me take better care of my body and take smaller portions (which also reduces food waste!)

Trading fast fashion for slow, socially conscious, environmentally-friendly clothing when I shop. Committing to only shopping at fair trade companies like NowThen The Label and secondhand stores in order to use the consumer market for good. This is an "eco-bikini" I just bought made of recycled nylon.

I am focusing on changing my eating habits in hopes to make my life more healthy. This will also help the food industry to focus less on meat and processed sugars. I am also trying to reduce my plastic and food waste.

I'm starting to collect and carry my trash to raise my own awareness of how I can reduce my waste.
