Amanda's actions

Community

Support Native Communities

I will use the resource links provided below and spend 30 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Leave No Trace

I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Do Nature Activities

I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 90 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Go for a Daily Walk

I will take a 30-minute walk outside each day.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Switch to Cold Water

I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

5-Minute Showers

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement

I will spend at least 30 minutes using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Food

Weekly Meal Planning

I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Simplicity

Needs Vs. Wants

I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 15

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Get Involved in the Water Justice Movement
Who is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/25/2021 10:04 AM
Minnesota has a large Native population, and a lot of the water resources that they hold sacred have been endangered by companies trying to build pipelines, or harmed from drilling. I’ve gone to a couple of water warrior gatherings up north to help raise awareness and protest the pipeline they’re planning.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/23/2021 9:16 PM
While walking instead of driving, you’re able to take in so much more of the neighborhood. You can smell bonfires, hear kids playing or dogs barking, and really just feel more connected to the environment and community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

    Amanda Maier 4/23/2021 9:12 PM
Since I’m living at home this year, I’ve been able to expand my herb garden that I usually have in containers. I’ve added lavender to my usual basil, mint, sage, and rosemary this year!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/22/2021 8:07 PM
In a lot of countries, certain animals have religious value and are not consumed for food. A lot of richer countries have the financial means to support raising animals like cows and pigs specifically for meat, and are able to make meat more widely accessible. A lot of resources are used to raise these animals, process the products made from them, and distribute them around the country. A lot of these livestock farms also mistreat their animals, and in processing, a lot of chemicals and preservatives get added that can be bad for human health too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/21/2021 8:36 PM
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about balance in relation to sustainability is balancing or offsetting our environmental impact with restorative actions, so we preserve and honor the planet and its resources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/19/2021 10:42 AM
Investing the money saved from making energy efficient choices into long term solutions for sustainability, or purchasing eco-friendly alternatives for everyday products

Hi Amanda, I love both of these alternatives! I think using our power as consumers in environmentally targeted and sustainable ways is so important :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/19/2021 10:30 AM
It can take some creativity to figure out ways you can use things for more than one function- keeping things simple can take some thinking and creativity, especially when there are so many readily available products or options.

I agree Amanda!  This is so true especially when many of us as college students live busy lives it can often be hard to find ways to be simple without thinking outside of the box!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/21/2020 10:58 AM
Exercising outside (running, walking) is a good way to connect with nature. To incorporate time with friends or family, you can always plan a workout together, which would also be good for keeping each other accountable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/21/2020 10:56 AM
Unfortunately, that doesn’t surprise me. A lot of families buy more food than they need and end up throwing it out when it goes bad. That $1500 could easily be spent on buying everything needed to plant a garden and grow your own food, which would be more cost effective and better for the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Amanda Maier's avatar
    Amanda Maier 4/21/2020 12:34 AM
A great way to express yourself through fashion that doesn’t require buying more clothing is to give clothes you already have a makeover- DIY old clothing into something new and keep textile waste out of landfills.
