Loraine's actions
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Water
Use Reusable Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Simplicity
Go For A Daily Walk Outside
I will take a walk outside for 24 minutes each day.
Community
SIGN UP TO VOTE
I will make sure I’m registered to vote. While I’m at it, I’ll sign up to help others register too!
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 45 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go For A Daily Walk OutsideFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Loraine Sepulona 11/30/2020 4:05 AMtaking a walk daily helps me to clear my mind and relax; just to have a moment where i am not stressed about school or work. being around nature, especially since i live at HLC, the scenery is always beautiful to be around. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Loraine Sepulona 11/30/2020 4:00 AMeating more fruits and veggies daily has a positive affect on my health & how i feel about myself; obviously it is a healthier option compared to other things like chips or ice cream. -
Loraine Sepulona 11/17/2020 11:14 PMso far, the challenge has been great! i think i have said this before in a previous post but i am actually enjoying this challenge because it encourages me to make better choices or to just continue doing what's right for the environment and everyone else :) -
Loraine Sepulona 11/06/2020 4:46 PMso far, my campus ecochallenge has been good because i have reminders on my phone about the daily activities i could be doing throughout my day; i have actually been applying them to my routine without knowing so i guess i am used to it. i hardly use the light in my room anymore because i am using the natural light or just my lamp once it gets dark. i am way more determined to exercise and for every meal i get at the dining commons or when i eat out, i skip the straw even if it is paper based because i want to reduce my waste. it's not just "homework" or a "project"; it's fun ways to help the environment one act at a time :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Loraine Sepulona 10/22/2020 12:48 AMThe dining commons provides single use cups and plates with the no plastic option which is obviously good. Recently, I have been trying not to use the cups there, although they are paper & not plastic but still waste, because I have my own reusable cups in my dorm. This would be good for me anyway, because I would be drinking more water if I avoid the fountain drinks every now and then :)
Other subs for single-use items would be rubber or metal straws and tote bags.-
Royal Riedinger 12/01/2020 12:08 AMI also try to avoid disposable paper and plastic cups, even though they are made of paper, the plastic lining on the inside makes them very bad for the environment. I used to drink from straws all the time, now i avoid them at all costs and I use chopsticks instead of plastic utensils.

Loraine Sepulona 10/22/2020 12:34 AMhealth: exercise daily
today, i was able to do a quick workout in my dorm between classes :)
it really helped me relieve some stress from all my homework assignments instead of just going on my phone to watch tik toks because it is really easy for most people to resort to their phone to take a break (me); so i wanted to change it up... hopefully it sticks! i hope this encourages others to substitute screen time with something cool <3 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Use Reusable BottlesWhat are some of the needs that water meets or benefits that water provides for you?
Loraine Sepulona 10/16/2020 5:59 PMof course, water is the healthiest option compared to soda and or juices . personally, i drink water to maintain my health. when i want to drink something, water isn't the first beverage in mind. unfortunately, as i got older i got out of the habit of drinking the standard amount of water that everyone should be drinking. so, i carry my reusable bottle everywhere i go to encourage myself to drink water daily. the basic benefits of drinking water are: prevents/treats headaches, maximizes physical activity, and treats skin problems like acne XD -
Loraine Sepulona 10/16/2020 5:40 PMso far, my campus ecochallenge has been going well. in a way, i am creating good habits for myself and learning about my impacts on the world in all the little tasks i do. the daily actions i set for myself definitely encourages me to continue them and do more :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity SIGN UP TO VOTEWhy is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?
Loraine Sepulona 10/14/2020 1:29 PMVoting is crucial to supporting and maintaining a just, sustainable, and thriving world because it allows our voices to be heard; we are able to bring about change if we advocate for the things that need changing for the better. Some ways you can actively participate in important decision making is communicating with those who hold that "power" to help or simply getting involved within the community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Loraine Sepulona 10/14/2020 1:19 PMI agree completely, we do need beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Personally, I believe this to be true because I spend a lot of time outside; clearing my head and journaling. It is very therapeutic and allows me to just destress. There are negative implications for people who spend a lot of time indoors. It could be they are so consumed by technology and or just too busy to have a moment for themselves to just relax and enjoy nature.
