Sia's actions
Community
Support A Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, neighbors, or classmates.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Join a Local CSA
I will sign up for a local CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture).
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community while observing best practices in my region for not spreading COVID-19.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Food
Locally-Sourced Meals
I will source 1 meal(s) each day from local producers.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 60 minute(s)
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 60 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Sia von Weiss 4/14/2021 6:10 PMThis wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and I want to continue to limit my screen time even once the campus challenge ends :) -

Sia von Weiss 4/13/2021 6:48 PMI've been wanting to find more ways to be more sustainable in my daily life. This campus ecochallenge has allowed me to achieve this by giving me many simple ideas that I could have already been doing. I love how its organized and how much it has been motivating me to change my lifestyle to better help the Earth :)
