REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Kaesha Yanes 11/18/2019 10:53 PMI like to preserve small cucumbers in glass bottles filled with vinegar. It tastes a lot like pickles from grocery stores. Another thing me and my dad like to make is kimchi. It may be a hassle cutting all the vegetables, but it is all worth it in the end. We love kimchi! -

Kaesha Yanes 11/18/2019 10:50 PMWhat Rachel Carson said rings true to me. Spending time outside, volunteering for a greater cause made me feel really glad. It was a way for me to connect to the world I am part of. A part of me had a feeling that nature said "thank you" back to me for the work I have done. I think that when one is fixed to staying indoors most of the time, one does not get to appreciate the beauty of nature. If one is sheltered, it is hard to find the emotional things that come with being aware of the natural world. -

Kaesha Yanes 11/17/2019 9:51 PMI know a fair amount of things in my community. Most of what I have learned are from my history class in my freshman year. I learned about how the people lived back then in Hawaii-- pre-contact. In the lifestyle and culture of the Hawaiians, they valued the aina so much than we do today. As we all know, our community today, compared to the past is very different. The "sense of place", in my opinion, somehow relates to having a presence of mind. Presence of mind, meaning, being more aware of our surroundings. Not only our surroundings, but being aware that we also part of the surrounding. This is important because when we become aware, we see that we have something to take care of. There are problems within our community that we should fix. -

I can also help by raising awareness on the human impacts to the environment, and educate them on ways to become more sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?
Kaesha Yanes 11/03/2019 11:15 PMSanitation is the key to be able to use all parts of the vegetable. For example, if I had a carrot, I would use a brush to scrub all of its sides, and the small narrow spaces where the dirt usually resides. Once it is cleaned thoroughly, it is okay to incorporate the entire vegetable into my meal. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Kaesha Yanes 11/02/2019 4:15 AMI use plastic bags, sanitary napkins, and sometimes straws and plastic cups. Plastic bags can be substituted with reusable bags that can be bought from grocery stores, Ross, etc. For sanitary napkins, I don't think there is any suitable substitution for me since these types of napkins are best suited for me. For plastic cups and straws, I substitute it with a reusable cup and straw that I bought from starbucks.
