My challenges are going great so far! It is fascinating how such minor changes make a difference. I remind myself to not use my phone while eating. I remind myself to use a mug. I set times to lay in bed and move my phone away so that I don't grab it. I am satisfied so far!

What inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?

    Josiel Perez's avatar
    Josiel Perez 11/22/2020 1:01 PM
My inspirations for acting on sustainable energy are environmental and economic. I feel a sense of responsibility when looking at the issue. I feel like a hero that is protecting the life of the planet. Additionally, things like solar panels are initially expensive but pay off in the longrun.

I'm glad you can relate Neesha! I've said this multiple times: I believe that we, in general, knowingly and willingly destroy life when we can make the choice to protect it. Why? For profit and convenience. If someone makes an effort to protect life, if they tie themselves up to a tree, then they are seen as "crazy."

    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Josiel Perez's avatar
    Josiel Perez 11/22/2020 12:56 PM
Where I live, the main source of energy is fossil fuels. However, there are some people that use solar panels. Fossil fuels increase the greenhouse effect, pollute the air, and amplify the destruction of habitats.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

    Josiel Perez 11/22/2020 12:54 PM
I got rid of my use of water bottles and single-use cups by switching to mugs and reusable cups. It isn't that difficult for me to make this change I just have to remind myself to not grab water bottles. I feel great doing it as I know that I am not contributing as much to the plastic problem.

    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Josiel Perez's avatar
    Josiel Perez 11/22/2020 12:52 PM
I have the habit of watching videos on my phone whenever I am eating. Over the past few days, I had to remind myself to get off my phone when eating. Now, when I eat, I have more thoughts running through my mind and engage in more conversations with my family.

    Josiel Perez 11/22/2020 11:55 AM
I have recently had issues with sleeping. I have had difficulty falling asleep. I also experienced sleep paralysis for the first time a few days ago. I would like  to fall asleep early so I can sleep longer. I don't want to take sleeping pills. I think that waking up early and reducing my use of electronics at night may help. Yesterday, I was able to sleep a bit longer. I will keep it up.

In order to help yourself sleep better, do not watch tv, or have any electronics on an hour before bed. This will ensure that you will have a good nights rest !

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Josiel Perez's avatar
    Josiel Perez 11/17/2020 3:54 PM
According to the articles I read, in areas near me, Latinos and blacks are affected the most by environmental degradation and irresponsibility. They are affected because they live near polluted air, near toxic waste, and get affected by lead poisoning at a greater rate.

    • Josiel Perez's avatar
      Josiel Perez 11/18/2020 12:16 AM
Good question Johnna! I think that it is due to socioeconomic factors. White people are more likely to live in affluent neighborhoods while Latinos and blacks are more likely to live in impoverished areas. These areas are where it is convenient for corporations to undergo industrial practices.

That is super interesting, I wonder what the correlation is as to why Latino and blacks are in those areas.

    Josiel Perez's avatar

Many members of the community are likely to suffer from health conditions like diabetes, obesity, and hypertension as a result of having less nutritious food. Having access to more nutritious food can help the community live a healthier lifestyle and suffer from these issues less.

    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Josiel Perez's avatar
    Josiel Perez 11/16/2020 12:15 PM
I'm not entirely sure why people in richer countries eat more meat. I imagine that it is due to the availability of such resources as well as cultural differences. Richer countries tend to be more secular. Eating more meat affects our planet by increasing demand for agricultural businesses. Gases like methane are emitted at a greater rate.
