    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

I was fairly surprised by the amount of waste I produce daily. It was a lot less than I maybe expected. While our personal waste accumulation is a problem, our reliable on single use packaging, especially plastic, is a systemic issue. Many people have a desire to reduce their waste but options too often rely on unintuitive replacements and aren’t accessible. All of this is compounded by the pandemic with reusable options sometimes being a safety issue.

    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

Meat is inherently expensive and inefficient to produce.  Animal agriculture has devastating impacts on the environment.  The Amazon rainforest is deforested in order to grow soy to feed cattle.   Animal agriculture emits an incredible amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases like methane into the atmosphere.  Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) pollute local environments with high concentrations of animal waste.  In fact, toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie that have occurred in recent years have been caused in part by runoff from CAFOs causing elevated nitrogen and phosphorus levels.  The actual process of slaughtering animals has horrific effects as well.  Slaughterhouse workers suffer from incredibly high rates of PTSD and most slaughterhouse workers are immigrants.  Lastly, the slaughtering of animals impacts the animals themselves.  Non-human animals are in fact sentient beings and so slaughtering them is bad.

    Food Whole Food Lifestyle
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

Food security is more immediately important than healthcare but I think they're both incredibly important.  Many past/present socialist countries have prioritized food sovereignty along with high-quality universal healthcare because those things are essential for survival.

    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

Balance is important in sustainability because we need to balance our actions as individuals, corporations, organizations, etc. and what is best for the environment. We need to have balance within our sustainable actions and support all areas of environmental justice. From Land Back actions to holding corporations accountable for emissions and more. In order to sustain the fight for environmental justice there needs to be balance in the movement and organizing tactics.

I use water to drink, cook, bathe, clean, etc. It is an essential part of our day to day lives whether we realize it or not. My mom bought a water dispenser a few years ago so now instead of plastic bottles we buy jugs and refill reusable water bottles.
