Mostly my son. I want him to live in a world that listen, assists, and nurtures each other. I want my son to live in a world that will be sustainable, both environmental and in our humanity.

This has been the most important challenge I think I have partaken in so far. My family and I were going through the process of Hospice with my Grandfather, saying goodbye and unfortunately we had to bury him this week. I have been overwhelmed emotionally and mentally. There have been many rough days but this challenge helped me find a small part of the day to try and be happy or think positively. My grandmother smiled when she saw my notes and it ended up cheering up the whole family each day.

I am sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing and thank you for trying your best to stay positive during such a difficult time. One day at a time it will become easier, I promise. Please reach out if you need anything!

    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

We use natural gas in my home. Since I have a large family, it is more difficult to make sure everyone is being proactive to conserve energy. I will aim to be more sustainable when using the heating system for this winter. By using less energy, my household reduces its carbon footprint which ultimately lowers emissions being released into the atmosphere. When less emissions are being released, especially on a large scale, the environment and its inhabitants will not suffer from climate change.

    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

This has always been an issue of mine, this October for Sustainability month I want to really try and get into the habit of taking faster showers. Or by turning off the water when I shampoo, condition, etc. and back on only to rinse. This will help cut my water time by more than half.

    Health More Fruits and Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

I tend to lose a bit of motivation to eat completely clean during the semester, especially when things get a little stressful. Like today, I am hoping that by adding this challenge to my daily goal I can start to slowly choose fruits/veggies to accomplish the additional 2 servings I need. By choosing healthy options over junk food it not only helps me feel better, but it doesn't support the companies that produce pollutants for an unhealthy mass production of cheap food alternatives.

Simplicity Go For A Daily Walk Outside
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

Being outside helps clear my mind and boost my mood overall. With a busy schedule I always feel that I don't have enough time to get fresh air, even when it's only for short time. The challenge helps give me that extra push to do something nice for myself. Once I get back from the walk, I can think more clearly and it really helps when doing homework.

    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I personally enjoy putting down my phone and not worrying about emails, social media, or calls. Instead I decided to learn a new language. I grabbed a language book and studied some vocabulary.

    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

Today I made a simple stir fry. With mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, broccoli and few other veggies. I found it incredible that it was not too difficult to remain zero waste with my ingredients. I researched and found smart techniques to saving the additional remains of veggies to make vegetable stock or soup. I am planning on using this technique in the future.
