Robert Breazile
"While growing up in Hawaii, I was always fairly concious of my impact on the environment. I am eager to learn more about how I and my family and friends can help to reduce our impact on nature and our world."

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Robert Breazile 5/05/2022 6:34 PMThe business of farming livestock contrbutes to climate cange in many ways, including waste runoff and water contamination near these facilities. The reduction of meat is also a proven healtbier way to live.-
Christian Perez 5/08/2022 1:08 PMHey Robert i completely agree most meat available today is completely unhealthy it is so packed of chemicals and hormones that it really shouldn't be consumed on a daily basis that is why more and more people are cutting most meat out there diets and becoming vegetarian. -
Andres Guerrero 5/05/2022 7:40 PMHi Robert. I agree that cutting back on meat can help improve one's diet and health. I've been eating less meat recently and as a consequence I've learned to incorporate more filling vegetables into my meals. I still think that meat is necessary in my life in order to have a balanced diet, but putting more focus on vegetables and grains is also very important and overlooked by many.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?
Robert Breazile 5/05/2022 6:31 PMI have decided to make an effort to compost all of the waste from preparing my meals by composting themfor our organic garden.-
Chloe Turner 5/09/2022 1:19 AMCompost is key to everything I have seen many people compost not only is it better for the environment but also it also helps richen your soil.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?
Robert Breazile 4/15/2022 10:43 PMI have started to participate in a rideshare program offered by my employer. One option is to bike to and from work, which I have selected. Each day that I participate, I am awarded 15 minutes of vacation time. This ride I do each day is about five miles round trip. It saves me on gas money, it helps me to produce less pollution, and I get some exercise too.-
Mohammad Abdallah 4/17/2022 11:28 PMHowdy, Robert
What an excellent reflection! To be completely candid with you, I hope my company would do such a thing, which gets me to an essential point. One additional benefit that this adds to this business is that he no longer has to worry about employees not appearing on time, which helps them save money. It results in a win-win situation.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Robert Breazile 3/31/2022 5:57 PMWe have reduced such items in our hoisehold, but the single use straws are mostly the item we could eliminate.-
Robert Breazile 4/11/2022 5:30 PMHi Ariana, I just don't use straws. I drink from the cups without using any resuable straws, I would most likely lose them anyway. -
Ariana Ariana 4/03/2022 5:00 PMHi Robert, I think that is a very good action inside your household. In your opinion, what do you think would be a good substitution for straws? (Metal, bamboo, or other material straws)

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Help OthersIn your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?
Robert Breazile 3/28/2022 6:30 PMI think that when people are not able to have positive interactions with those who live in their area, the sense of belonging to that community is not posible. This means that when resources in a given society are distributed unevenly, the part of the society which has fewer resources will continue to struggle.-
Eva Santoyo 4/08/2022 4:49 PMI agree! I believe that there needs to be balance and respect for a community to have a strong sense of belonging.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Get Involved in the Water Justice MovementWho is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?
Robert Breazile 3/28/2022 6:18 PMI found when reading an article in the Pasadena Star-News titled Clean up Inland Empire water contamination at its source by Erin Brokovich (2021), that although much has been done to eliminate agricultural runoff and clean up contaminated point sources of water (at a cost in the billions, paid by consumers), nothing has been done to remove old failing septic systems in the valley. The cost for clean up for these issues is passed on to the consumer, impacting low and middle income residents to a much greater extent. The lack of attention to the failing septic system issue also affects these lower income residents, as many affluent neighborhoods do not use such systems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Tend a GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Robert Breazile 3/28/2022 5:56 PMI grew up on the island of Maui, in Hawaii. When I was 18 years old I had a job where I had to do a measurement and hiking survey of the outer western slopes of Haleakala volcano for a fence which would keep wild goats out of the inner part of the national park area. The goats were eating the Haleakala silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. macrocephalum), an indigenous plant found only there, and the hopes were that a fence might help to protect the plant. The awesome and remote area had a profound impact on my attitudetowards nature. -
Robert Breazile 3/27/2022 9:53 AMI didn't know the importance of it when I was doing it while growing up, but whenever my friends and I went to the beach, we would each bring a trashbag and fill it up first when we got there. This eventually grew into an entire annual beach cleanup day for our high school which is still being done to this day. On our first full school beach trip, we collected over 150 large bags of trash which included plastics, food containers, and even car parts. Change really does come from starting with a small action,-
Robert Breazile 3/31/2022 6:08 PMHello Dante, There's a well-known Chinese proverb that says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Yet far too many people never even get started on that journey, so give yourself a fist bump for taking your step! -
Dante Cesarman 3/28/2022 1:57 AMI didn't get the chance to participate in many events to help the environment as when the pandemic started it sent everyone into lockdown but I am very much looking forward to taking various steps that can help in varying degrees, I'm glad that you mention that change comes from small actions as I would love to see the help that I can bring reach outside of just class.
