My absolute favorite activity is hiking.  One of the few upsides to lock down was that I could indulge my hiking passion any day that I wished.

Diana Moss and Ayana Elizabeth Johnson have both inspired me to start speaking out about the motivations of my actions more.  There is a feeling in our society, I think, that we shouldn't talk too explicitly about choices around sustainability because it might make others uncomfortable.  But it turns out that we all worry about that but want to hear about the actions that others are taking.  I am joining a new school next year because of my commitment to working hard on issues related to sustainability...and I am really trying to talk about that openly.

On Earth Day, we watched the PBS documentary about Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World.  A remarkable young woman.  We need more like her!

We are already enjoying the results of our lock down composting.  Our roses are starting to bloom and our columbine is in full bloom.

    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

When I am preparing a meal with lots of vegetables, I try to save the parts that I'm not going to eat (leek tops, peels, onion skins, etc) to make veggie stock.  Those bits still end up in the compost when I'm done making the stock, but I feel like I've at least maximized the nutritional value of the food I've purchased.

Many of the biggest health problems in the U.S. are directly linked to diet.  Access to nutritious and delicious food improves the health of people and, if done well, improves reduces green house gas emissions.  We need to work on a complete overhaul of the 2023 Farm Bill.

Today I called Sen. Hueso, Hertzberg and Eggman to ask them to support SB467 to provide 2500 ft. setbacks for the over 2 million Californians that live, work, go to school, and are cared for with oil and gas drilling right in their backyards.

How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

It's very difficult. Some days are better than others. I try to walk every day and de-stress by enjoying the environment around me, the company of my dog, and the feel of the sun and air against my face. Sometimes all you can do is try to remember to do one's own part, that you can't act for everybody, or solve things that are not in your control.
