    Water Conserve Toilet Water
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

In my region, I do not believe that we can sustain our water resources as it is in very high demands at all time. So if our reservoir runs low, then we would have to pump even more water from underground. People just need to lessen their water usage.

Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Nataly Tejeda 7/28/2021 3:39 PM
Some foods I want to preserve and enjoy is pickling vegetables like carrots and cucumber. I also want to try it with fruits, such as strawberries, grapes, and peaches. I am able to enjoy food and help our environment, so I plan to continue preserving food.

    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

    Thu Pham's avatar
    Thu Pham 7/27/2021 9:25 AM
No, it does not surprise me that the average family of four spends 1.5k on food that they throw out because of reasons including expiration dates, rot, and other significant problem that might have cause the food to get thrown out. Instead of over buying certain food items that cannot be consumed in that amount of time, we should put that money towards savings and invest in companies that are currently trying to protect our ecosystem by producing reusable items for our household.

The average American throws out a pound of food per day, mostly fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat, a new USDA study finds. That’s a total of 150,000 tons of food per year, enough to feed 2 billion extra people per year

    Health Reduce refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

Before I started this challenge, I didn't think twice about eating a sugary food. After paying attention to what I am eating more, I have reduced my intake, and hopefully plan to stop my intake of sugar little to nothing.

Hi Basheer! Reducing our sugar intake is vital, but it can be difficult. We consume different types of sugars in our diets, such as natural and processed sugars. Eating natural sugars from fruits can be a healthier alternative if you have sugar cravings.

    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Tanajah Steen's avatar
    Tanajah Steen 7/25/2021 9:44 PM
Some implications from us spending most of our time indoors is that we miss everything going on right in front of us. When we're inside we can watch movies or documentaries about nature but it's not the same as being there physically. I do feel that spending more time outdoors can help alleviate a little bot of stress since it's just you and nature.

Hey Tanajah, I agree how indoor learning can be helpful, but visiting outdoors is another feeling of happiness. Everytime I leave my workspace and head outside for fresh air, I feel my mood getting better. It is definitely the medicine we all need.

Action Track: Building Resilience Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
A recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?

The main thing that can be done by the average individual to help fight these types of oppressions is to spend money at the POC owned businesses. By using your dollar you show that these businesses are strong viable options for investment and fiscal support. It was difficult for me to believe just how few POC owned businesses there were around where I live, but after seeing the data from the above mentioned study I can see why.

Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Moreak Gomez-Diaz's avatar
    Moreak Gomez-Diaz 7/25/2021 9:28 PM
I often find myself using a myriad of single use items. In particular sandwich bags, plastic bags, and straws tend to be the most common. I have been able to limit my use of plastic bags by using a tote bag recently. The straws can be eliminated by me either buying a metal straw, or simply opting out of taking one. However, I do not know what to do for the sandwich bags. Any ideas?

Hi Moreak! Finding alternatives for single-used items is vital for a sustainable lifestyle. For sandwich bags, you can use food containers. Containers may not be as practical, but at least you can reuse them.

I have replaced using plastic straws with reusable straws throughout my household.

What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

    Parris Allen's avatar

Fruits and Vegetables! That has to be the best food choice for not only me but my 2 year old daughter who is learning about the foods that are good for her. Everyone should definitely eat more fruits and vegetables! we even started planting our own in our backyard which has been nothing less than amazing to experience and watch her experience as well.

Hi Parris, its awesome that you are looking out for your Childs health. The typical American diet sure could use more vegetables. Have you considered looking at the above question form an environmental impact stance instead of dietary?
