Minnesota has a large Native population, and a lot of the water resources that they hold sacred have been endangered by companies trying to build pipelines, or harmed from drilling. I’ve gone to a couple of water warrior gatherings up north to help raise awareness and protest the pipeline they’re planning.

    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

Using skip the straws is a great way to start incorporating the “R’s”! Bringing reusable bags to the grocery store and using reusable water bottles are other great ways to use the “R’s”.

While walking instead of driving, you’re able to take in so much more of the neighborhood. You can smell bonfires, hear kids playing or dogs barking, and really just feel more connected to the environment and community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

Since I’m living at home this year, I’ve been able to expand my herb garden that I usually have in containers. I’ve added lavender to my usual basil, mint, sage, and rosemary this year!

The ecochallenge has helped encourage me to compost more. My roommates and I have just started composting and we are still learning but it has been a rewarding experience so far.

    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I am new-ish to composting! It has become one of my favorite things and I am so glad that the food excess will go to hopefully help something new grow!
