    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

Eating more meat affects our planet negatively because of the number of resources that go into producing meat. Off the top of my head, I know that it takes almost 2,000 gallons of water and 2 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of beef. Livestock also creates methane and depending on the fertilizers used they also produce nitrous oxide emissions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Using too much water dries up rivers. The Carmel River is experiencing a 45% decreased water supply, and some rivers (the Colorado for example) never actually make it to the ocean. It is, however, a fallacy to believe that showering less puts a dent in one's water consumption. Eating one less steak makes up for dozens of showers.

Simplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?

Whenever I want to buy an item, I double check whether I actually need it and most often sleep on it. Most time, I don't need it. I try to get many things used and will try to pass them on if I don't need them anymore instead of throwing them away.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Buy Used Clothes
Do people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?

Yes, because naturally, those who consume in excess will need to reduce their consumption greatly before anyone less privieged can be expected to do so as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

This is exactly why I think it is important to appreciate one's natural environment with all senses. It can be a spiritual experience. Also, only true appreciation of the natural environment makes one want to commit to preserving it
